On 26 June 1958, Rakaposhi (7,758 m) was first climbed by Mike Banks and Tom Patey, members of a British-Pakistani expedition, via the south-west spur. Both suffered minor frostbite during the ascent. Another mountaineer slipped and fell whilst descending and died during the night.
